A barcode can stay the same while the product information changes
GS1 Digital Link connects a physical identifier to web resources. The ongoing work sits behind the scan, not inside the printed square.
Editorial visualizationA printed code looks permanent. The web page behind it does not have to be. GS1 Digital Link represents GS1 product identifiers in a web-address structure, allowing an item’s identifier to connect to online information and services.
Separate the identifier from the destination
GS1 now publishes the URI syntax and the conformant resolver rules as separate standards. The syntax describes how identifiers are represented in an address. A resolver can use that address to direct a request to related information.
The resolver standard explains that a redirect can be updated without changing the Digital Link URI printed on the product. A package can therefore retain its identifier while the destination is maintained separately. This is a mechanism for managing links, not a claim that a printed label stores an entire product history.
A QR code is only the carrier
GS1 distinguishes QR Code and Data Matrix carriers that use Digital Link URI syntax from other barcode arrangements. A square code on a package does not automatically mean the same encoding, scanning capability or application is in use.
GS1’s guidance also cautions that a one-dimensional retail barcode may still be needed during the transition to compatible retail scanning. The existence of a web-readable code is not proof that every checkout can use it. Compatibility must be assessed against the actual scanning environment.
The less visible business obligation
Our analysis: the durable asset is not the printed square alone. It is the identifier together with a maintained domain, working destinations and reliable product information. A redirect can change where a scan lands; it cannot establish whether the information presented there is accurate.
That distinction matters when evaluating a supplier’s demonstration. Showing a successful scan proves that a link opened at that moment. It does not, by itself, prove data completeness, ongoing maintenance or adoption across a supply chain.
