MetaHuman Creator’s Web App Is Closed. How to Save Your Characters
Epic retired the browser editor on November 5. The temporary Quixel Bridge download window gives creators a chance to save their work, and editable migration has separate requirements.
Editorial visualizationEpic Games retired the MetaHuman Creator web app on November 5. If a character exists only in your old online gallery, you can still retrieve it through Quixel Bridge for a limited time. Epic’s retirement notice lists February 2027, and its shutdown announcement describes a 90-day window after closure. Characters already exported to an Unreal Engine project can still be used.
Unreal Engine 5.6 and later include MetaHuman Creator for making new characters. If you want to keep editing a character made on the web, you need a compatible source character and the migration path. Start by deciding whether you need to preserve the character for use in a project or retain the ability to change it in Creator. Epic’s migration guide explains the difference.
First, get the asset out of the gallery
Sign into Quixel Bridge with the Epic account that created the character. Open My MetaHumans and find the character you want to keep. Bridge can generate and download its assets, which you can then add to a compatible Unreal project. Epic’s legacy download documentation covers the process on Windows and macOS. Before relying on your backup, open the project and verify that the character is present.
Editorial visualizationFor an editable character, choose the migration path
Epic’s current migration guide calls for a 5.6-compatible source character and an Unreal Engine 5.7 or newer project with the MetaHuman Creator plugin enabled. For this workflow, open Quixel Bridge from the project’s Window menu. After downloading the character at Cinematic (Complete) quality, choose the appropriate action when you add it. Epic also links the workflow from its MetaHuman 5.7 release notes.
| Action | What it adds to the project |
|---|---|
| Import | A character assembled for use in the project, without editability in MetaHuman Creator |
| Migrate | An editable MetaHuman Character asset that can be assembled later |
| Import and Migrate | Both the assembled character and the editable asset |
If you also want to carry over hair assets and clothing, Epic directs you to Import and Migrate. The hair assets are reapplied automatically, while you’ll need to assign the clothing manually. Epic’s migration steps
Editorial visualizationOlder web characters can be a special case. Epic’s shutdown announcement directed users to upgrade older characters in the web app before migrating, but web sessions have ended. If Bridge still lists an older character, prioritize retrieving the available assets. Access to a download alone does not establish compatibility with the editable migration workflow. Epic’s shutdown and compatibility guidance
Epic says a migrated character may look slightly different in the newer Creator. If the look matters to a project already in production, compare the imported and migrated versions before replacing the character in a shot or build. The first deadline concerns getting a copy out of the gallery. Fine-tuning that copy can come later. Migration guide and expected differences
